How To Make Bread

Fresh bread is one of the greatest joys of life. However, many of us shy away from the task of making it ourselves. What if we told you that making bread at home is not as hard as you think.

Don’t believe us? Just follow this guide and try for yourself to find out!

What you need

  • 500 grams of white bread flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon of caster sugar
  • 7 grams of fast acting yeast

Make the Dough

Lightly oil a loaf tin and set it aside. Next, in a large bowl, combine 500 grams of white bread flour, 1 and a half teaspoon of fine salt, and 1 teaspoon of cast sugar. Then add 7 grams of fast acting yeast and mix. Slowly stir in 300 mililitres of warm water until the dough is no longer sticky.

Knead the Dough

Lightly flour any kitchen surface and begin kneading the dough for 15 minutes. Form it into a smooth ball and put it into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover the bowl with a tea-towel or cling film and leave the dough to rest for at least 2 hours or until the dough has doubled in size.

Knead Again

Place the risen dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead once more for at least 2 minutes. The dough should now be smooth. Using a cupping motion, smooth the dough over the top and meet your hands underneath, forming a tight but smooth surface. Place the dough in the previously oiled tin, drizzle lightly with oil, cover with cling film and let it prove for an hour.

Bake

Pre-heat an oven at 200C for 20 minutes. Place the tin in the centre of the oven and bake for 15 minutes. This should result in a evenly baked bread with a firm crust.
