Batata Nu Shaak

Batata means potato in Gujarati, and Shaak means gravy. This delicious potato dish originated in Gujarat but is popular across the subcontinent for its subtle but unique taste. Served with rice or naan, this mouthwatering gravy can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner.

Ingredients

    • Oil2 – 3 tablespoon
    • Black Cumin Seeds1 teaspoon
    • Yellow Mustard Seeds1 teaspoon
    • Potatoes2 – 3, sliced
    • Garlic Paste1 teaspoon
    • SaltTo taste
    • Turmeric Powder½ teaspoon
    • Red Chilli Powder1 teaspoon
    • Coriander Powder½ teaspoon
    • Cumin Powder½ teaspoon
    • Tomatoes1 – 2, cubed
    • Lemon Juice1 teaspoon
    • WaterAs required
    • Brown Sugar½ teaspoon
    • Green Chillies1 – 2, chopped
    • CorianderFor garnish

Preparation

  • In a pre-heated pan, add oil, black cumin seeds, yellow mustard seeds and mix well.
  • Add potatoes and mix well for a good 5 minutes, so that it mixes with the other ingredients.
  • Then add garlic paste and mix well.
  • Add salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and mix well for at least 5 minutes.
  • Then add tomatoes and mix well, until the tomatoes soften. After that add lemon juice, water and mix well.
  • Add brown sugar and mix well.
  • Add chopped green chillies and let it simmer for about 05 to 10 minutes.
  • Garnish with coriander.
