Hyderabadi Khichdi


Khichdi is known to be everyones comfort food. Hyderabadi khichdi is a delicious rice recipe from Hyderabadi cuisine. It is a mouth-watering comfort food made with rice, lentils and aromatic spices. Khichdi is eaten with yogurt, kachumber salad, zeera raita or mint chutney.

    • Ghee3 – 4 tablespoons
    • Onion, sliced2
    • Coriander seeds½ teaspoon
    • Cardamom2
    • Cinnamon stick1
    • Peppercorn6
    • Green chilies, sliced2
    • Bay leaf1
    • Ginger paste1 teaspoon
    • Garlic paste1 teaspoon
    • Turmeric powder½ teaspoon
    • Wateras required
    • Whole red chili3
    • Orange masoor lentil, pre-soaked½ kilogram
    • Basmati rice, pre-soaked½ kilogram
    • Saltto taste
    • Chicken powder1 teaspoon
    • Fried onions2


  • Heat ghee in a large pot, saute onions until translucent.
  • Add coriander seeds, cardamoms, cinnamon stick, peppercorn, sliced green chilies, bay leaf, ginger, garlic paste, turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Add water, whole red chili, soaked orange lentils, soaked rice and mix.
  • Add water, salt, chicken powder and mix well.
  • Now add fried onion, mix well until the water is dried.
  • Cover the top with a cloth and simmer for 10 minutes.
