A wholesome dish prepared with black lentils that is equal parts tasty and nutritious. Kaali Daal originated in North India, where it is fondly known as Maa ki Daal - Mom's Daal, making it the ultimate taste of home.

Ingredients

    • Oil4 – 5 tablespoons
    • Onions, sliced2
    • Cinnamon stick1
    • Peppercorn1 teaspoon
    • Black cardamom1
    • Whole red chili8 – 10
    • Garlic paste1 tablespoon
    • Tomatoes sliced1 – 2
    • Brown masoor lentils, soaked1 KG
    • Saltto taste
    • Garam masala1 tablespoon
    • Red chili powder1 tablespoon
    • Wateras needed
    • Tamarind pulp1 tablespoon

Preparation

  • In a large pot, over medium flame, heat oil and saute onions.
  • Then add cinnamon stick, peppercorn, black cardamom, whole red chili, garlic paste and mix well.
  • Add sliced tomatoes and mix again.
  • Then add brown masoor lentils and stir.
  • Add salt, garam masala, red chili powder and stir well.
  • Add water, cover the lid and cook on low flame for 10 minutes.
  • Add tamarind pulp and mix.
